Bicycle city

Work Room chat:
I bumped into this short documentary on vintage jewellery on YouTube. Quite interesting, I must say. :) And I think I like Elsa Schiaparelli's (Coco Chanel's nemesis... LOL...) work quite a bit. Well, she's no longer around and neither am I sure how her business is being carried forward, or if it is still in operation, but you have just got to check out her ultra cool website! I just love how they put it; "what would I like to be in another life, if that could happen?" Pretty neat, huh?

Well, I'm referring to Oxford, actually. I call it the bicycle city because I think this must be the only place in the whole of England that you'll see more bicycles than anything else! LOL.... XD

I went to Oxford to visit a friend who was studying there last month and had her be the tour guide for the day! =D

Oxford is a very different place compared to the other parts of England. It's a very cultured city, I find. Erm, the culture I'm referring to here is the traditional English culture.

It's quite a sight really. When you're present in Oxford itself, you kinda understand why so many people wants to come to Oxford to study. The learning culture is just so different altogether. It's very.....erm,...... yea, c.u.l.t.u.r.e.d.

Apparently, when the students go for exam, the still go in robes and stuffs, like the olden days and that itself even becomes part of the tourist attraction. Unfortunately, I didn't get to take a picture of it since well, you only get to see it during the exam period and guess what? They just finished their exam period and are already on summer break. Bummer!

The university has got many colleges. They've got like, I don't know how many but blocks and blocks of college buildings which pretty much make up for the city itself. Of course, there's still your suburb residentials and all that but I'm talking about the city centre.

All the colleges would have this same theme. A nice green lawn upon entrance. But the sad thing is, no one is allowed to sit, walk or do whatever on it. But why??!! o_O

The lawn looked so nice that it sure made me feel like rolling around on it like in the Bollywood movies but I bet rolling on this law would most probably be waaay nicer! LOL..... XP

The architecture is also very old English like you would have most probably expected to see in Oxford.

I took this picture, but then was told that I took the wrong picture because the famous part of this building is its blue gate!

So, ok, second try with the famous blue gate! :P

But what I certainly, certainly wasn't expecting is THIS.

I know European countries are famous fot statue like this but I never knew even Oxford has them. And certainly not one at the top of the roof!

I think I must have been so taken aback then I even forgotten to ask the story behind it. Does anyone of you know?

Hi Wendy - came to your blog via JL and your comment about the statue made me giggle! The statue is by an artist called Antony Gormley who models the statues on himself. He has made quite a few of these and they appear all over the place, he even has some installed on a beach! Hope you're having a great time here in England!
